What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a freehand hair-colouring technique where lighter colour is painted onto selected sections of the hair. This creates a softer, more blended effect than traditional highlights, with brightness placed where it will complement your chosen look.
Balayage can be subtle and sun-kissed or brighter and more noticeable. Your stylist will tailor the placement and tone to your starting colour, hair history and the result you want. At your consultation, we’ll talk through your ideas, assess your hair and explain how to care for and maintain your colour.

Balayage or highlights?
Balayage and highlights both create brightness and dimension, but the techniques give different results. Balayage is painted freehand onto selected sections to create a softer, more blended effect. Highlights are usually woven through the hair for a brighter, more even finish.
The right choice depends on your starting colour, the look you want and how often you’d like to maintain it. Your stylist will talk through the options with you, consider your colour history and help plan a result that suits your hair and routine. Bring along inspiration photos if there’s a particular look you have in mind.
Blonde balayage
Blonde balayage brings lightness through the hair while keeping the finish soft and blended. You might prefer a subtle, sunlit effect or a brighter blonde with more contrast through the lengths and around the face.
Your stylist will plan the placement and tone around your starting colour, previous colour services and the result you’re hoping for. If your hair has been coloured before, achieving your chosen blonde may take more than one appointment. We’ll discuss what’s realistic for your hair and how to maintain your colour.
Warm & dimensional
Warm, dimensional balayage blends lighter pieces with the depth of your base colour to create a rich, multi-tonal finish. Caramel, honey, toffee and golden tones can add warmth and movement to brunette hair, while also bringing softness and depth to lighter shades.
The placement can be subtle or more noticeable, depending on how much contrast you like. During your consultation, we’ll discuss the tones you’re drawn to and plan a result that works with your current colour and hair history.
Face-framing brightness
Face-framing brightness adds lighter pieces around the front of your hair to create a fresh, light-reflecting effect. It can be kept soft and blended or made more defined, and paired with balayage or highlights through the rest of your hair.
Your stylist will talk through where you’d like the lighter pieces to sit and how they’ll work with your parting, haircut and usual style. This gives you a tailored way to brighten your look without necessarily changing your overall colour.
