Balayage or Highlights? How to Choose the Right Hair Colour for You

Balayage and highlights are both ways of adding lighter pieces to the hair, but the finished effect, maintenance and placement can be very different. The right choice depends on how light you want to go, how much contrast you like, how often you want to visit the salon and what is already on your hair.

At Glitterati Hair & Beauty in Weybridge, this is one of the most common colour questions we are asked during consultations.

What is balayage?

Balayage is a technique used to create softer, more blended lightness through the hair. The placement is usually designed to look less uniform than traditional highlights and can be concentrated around the face, through the mid-lengths or towards the ends depending on the result you want.

Because the colour can be placed away from the root, balayage often gives a softer grow-out and can suit clients who do not want a strong regrowth line.

What are traditional highlights?

Highlights are normally created using foils and can give a more structured, consistent lift from closer to the root. They can be fine and subtle or stronger and brighter depending on the section size, placement and toner used afterwards.

They are often a good choice if your priority is more noticeable brightness from the root area or a more evenly blonde result.

Which looks more natural?

Neither technique is automatically more natural. A beautifully placed set of highlights can be extremely soft, while balayage can be bold and high-contrast. What matters is the placement, the tone and how the colour works with your natural base.

Which needs less maintenance?

Balayage can often be lower maintenance because the root area is intentionally softer, but that does not mean it is maintenance-free. Toners, glosses, face-framing pieces and occasional larger refresh appointments may still be needed.

Highlights that begin close to the root usually need refreshing more regularly if you want to keep that brighter root-to-end effect.

What if you have dark hair?

On darker hair, both balayage and highlights can work well, but the result depends heavily on previous colour and hair condition. Going lighter may need to happen over more than one appointment if the hair has old colour or needs to remain in good condition.

What if you are already blonde?

If you are already blonde, the choice is often about placement rather than simply becoming lighter. Balayage can add depth and dimension, while highlights can restore brightness nearer the root.

The toner matters as much as the lightening

The lightening process creates the brightness, but the toner helps determine whether the finished result looks beige, creamy, cool, honey, golden or neutral. Two clients can have similar highlight placement but very different final colours because of the toner.

How we decide at consultation

During a colour consultation, we look at your natural base, previous colour, condition, density, haircut, lifestyle and maintenance preference. We also talk about what you mean by words such as 'blonde', 'natural' or 'low maintenance', because those can mean very different things to different people.

Balayage or highlights: which should you choose?

Choose based on the result you want rather than the name of the technique. If you prefer a softer grow-out and dimensional colour, balayage may suit you. If you want brighter colour nearer the root or a more evenly highlighted finish, traditional highlights may be more appropriate.

If you are unsure, a consultation is the best starting point. Glitterati Hair & Beauty is on Church Street in Weybridge, and the team can recommend the most suitable approach after seeing your hair in person.
